When the legal opinion has been given on the Governor's view that the jurisdiction of the Chief Justice in internment was not valid, Eastern Department A should see this file, in case a similar question has arisen, or may arise, in Singapore and the Malayan Union. They will also wish to know of the proposed validating Ordinance in regard to marriages.
A further letter has been received from Messrs. Maddin and Co. on 53528/330. ? We should reply to them on the lines of paragraph 10 of 16 and inform the Governor (a) that we approve of the draft Ordinance enclosed with his despatch;
and
(b) that we agree that the exercise of jurisdiction of the Supreme Court during internment by the late Chief Justice should not be validated.
